"SUPERLOWREZ"

Vertexlist
2005-12-01

Not having seen a show presents something of a problem when recommending it, but the excellent artists involved in Superlowrez are attached to an interesting curatorial project. Joe McKay, Kristen Lucas, Jillian McDonald, and Joe Armhein are among a group of eight artists commissioned by Bit Editions to create work for an experimental video matrix. The 12 x 14 inch matrix is limited to 168 discrete LEDS, pushing the representational quality of the medium towards abstraction. While artists like McKay and Lucas have long explored the fringes of video technology with interactive performances and installations, it should be interesting to see what the narrative leaning artists like McDonald and Armhein create within the severely restricted field. The reductive premise should force the artists to abandon familiar styles and get creative. This kind of experimentation is exactly what the neighborhood needs to differentiate itself from the overwhelming commerce in Chelsea.
