If New York is the bluest of the “blue states,” then the Williamsburg art scene is its indigo heart. Sante Scardillo sharpens his culturally critical skewers using subtly subverted ads and newspaper headlines to lambaste the Bush administration and their policies, the war in Iraq and Republican red-staters with an almost poetic cynicism. Being an equal opportunity satirist, who questions the messenger as well as the message, Scardillo’s left hook connects solidly with some of the liberal’s favorite sacred cows as well like the hipper than thou fashion world, media promoted conspicuous consumption and even that doddering “Old Gray Lady,” the New York Times.
