Jason Glasser, “Graphic Fuzz”

Parker’s Box
2006-05-01

You wish you could make work like Jason Glasser, and you probably can. Just free your mind of all insecurity and inhibition; strip it of any allegiance to an artistic style or movement; bleach out whatever stains of pretension and arrogance might have been left over from all that insecurity and inhibition, and let it fill with curiosity and fresh fruit (and a few weird preoccupations like cops, lions, and lakes). There you have it: a seemingly effortless but rich and evocative visual poetry, consumable in an instant like dynamite graphic design or over the course of years like a photograph of your childhood home. An approach to image-making that will bring as much joy and insight to you the maker as it does the audience. And you can do whatever you want with this new head of yours: make luscious pop paintings on glass, Freudian collages on paper, Surrealist video montages, catchy music, heart-wrenching music, you name it. Just don‚t get stuck. The key is to keep bubbling, that’s what makes this whirligig’s giddy Graphic Fuzz fizz.
