Back With a Vengeance

The WAH Center
2007-11-01

“Sun Pictures to MegaPixels” is a massive photo show Curated by Joel Simpson that reintroduces the Williamsburg Art and Historical Center after a two year hiatus. As with any show this large (I stopped counting names at 65 and there was still half a page left), inevitably there will be some derivative and less than remarkable examples, but within the multitude of directions and techniques there’re genuine gems and something for every taste and predilection. The unique platinum prints by Thomas Mezzanotte are riveting. Looking like expressionistic watercolors, photosensitive emulsion is briskly brushed onto heavy paper. When exposed, the photographic modeling and textures of form seem to emanate magically from the gray grounds. “JOB”, an ambrotype by Michael Mazzeo, has ultra-rich blacks that reflect a dark metallic sheen. This mode of printing captures an antique sense that expresses appropriately the models skin-tones and costumes which appear to have been snapped during the Harlem Renaissance. With its unique and spacious galleries it’s a pleasure to welcome back the WAH Center.
