Poets of Paste

Ad Hoc Art
2008-07-01

The Poets of Paste make work with muscle. Their silk-screened, sawed, glued, nailed, painted, printed pieces jostle the walls of Adhoc with the charge of top shelf street art. Powerful figures, alternately lyrical, political, rhapsodic, often on a physically grand scale, convey an artistic heat that would make Leon Golub, Robbie Conal, Swoon and other Godparents of this form very proud. Purveyors of emotive bodies in the public realm tend to share a knack for drama and this crew is no exception. There is material subtlety here – in the way a sheet of rice paper is applied to a panel of wood or a grouping of paper cutouts is arranged in a cardboard box – but the goal is intensity, art meant to stop you in your tracks and you’ll want to do that over and over at this show. These four poets get dirty when they work, and their labor has made for some very passionate poetry.
