Holiday Twofer: Forth Estate Editions at KVN, Scott Malbaurn at Janet Kurnatowski

2008-12-01

Being an old print maker, I was very impressed with these prints (they’re a lot better than my bad puns). Punchy and perfect, this selection provides aficionados with virtuoso examples of etching in two works by Joseph Hart that display velvety color aquatint, enamel like colors that scream contemporary institutional décor in a hand-cut screen print of graffitied lockers titled “Do/You (Flat)”, by Ian Cooper, and latest in experimental combinations of low and high-tech printing techniques and materials with works by Alex Doge, Kevin Zucker, Angela Dufresne and Sara Greenberger. Fourth Estate should be saluted for their commitment to the wonderful world of the “print”. Also included are Molly Smith, Will Yackulic, Glen Baldridge, Phil Sanders, Matt Keegan and Paul Pope. Scott Malbaurn brings a hard edged Modernist painting approach to a personal group of shapes and forms. Using an immaculate technique, flawless finish and refined color sense, Malbaurn pinches and stretches Formalist formats, filling planes with monochrome overlays of pigment that read as stylish embossed patterning, close hued stripes that vibrate at the lower end of visual harmonics, and rows of a leaf like form, both primal and refined, resembling a shape that might be found on a Samoan battle shield.
