Urban Biotic at Lumenhouse

A visit to Lumenhouse enlightens themes that are on the forefront of our minds as we are grappling with the reality of how industrialization has affected our natural environment. The artists presented in “Urban Biotic” reflect on this and how nature is reasserting itself within industrial urban environments. Hyungsub Shin reconfigures discarded elements of industry to create seemingly organic sculptural constructions, demonstrating the unseen forces of nature at work, that are reclaiming these materials. The sculptures he presents resemble fused neurons with elongated and floating dendrites masterfully constructed out of everyday objects.

Jon Elliott’s paintings prognosticate on the future. in a post-technological era, where obsolete agents of technology become enmeshed in the landscape. The haunting imagery etched in the gloss surface of these pieces proposes a bleak fate for generations to come.

Sarah Browns paintings present a counterpoint to Elliot’s visions of the future, wherein wildlife emerges in neglected urban areas.

This compelling exhibition, curated by Aurora Robson and Mariko Tanaka is sure to kindle thoughts on our current rate of consumption of technology and materials.
