Go Get Your Shinebox
Happy days are here again, or so one might think, after viewing Brooklynite Gallerys’ “Go Get Your Shinebox”, a collection of over 100 artists responding to the question, ‘If you had to work on the streets, what object would you create to survive?’
Dazzling, provocative and ultimately practical, the assembled 3-D objects (all roughly 12 x 12 in size) make for a handsome show. Standouts include a hypnotic, kaleidoscopic video collage by Pure Evil, the refreshingly honest “Rent a Pen” offering by Andy Squire (Ten cents per minute!! I need the cash!!) and an emotionally restorative “Traveling Apothecary Box” by Plimsoul. Dr. Plimsouls tincture remedies contain titles like ‘The Green Back Ache’, ‘The Wall Street Sniffle’ and the personally intriguing, ‘Writers Block’.
Meticulously installed and paired with an impressive 10 minute, stop-motion video on YouTube, “Shinebox” is a paean to artist and gallery industriousness. If happy days seem not quite here, from the look of things at the Brooklynite, they can’t be far behind. Go Get Your Shinebox
