David Pappaceno Wiltartanthal at ENGLISH KILLS and more BOS
James Kalm continues his Bushwick Open Studios marathon with this visit to "Wiltartanthal" a one person show of sculpture and paintings by David Pappaceno. Digging into the historical essence of sculpture, namely the Venus of Willemdorf and other ancient fertility fetishes, Pappaceno adds a formalistic contrast with complex renderings of tartan plaids and balances these expressions with frames and bases of glistening resin. Allusions to other contemporary artists like Willem de Kooning align this work with today's awareness of artistic context. Slipping across Forrest Street, viewers are brought along to tour a pop-up show of English Kill artists, and a visit to a re-creation of Don Pablo Pedro's studio.
