“Transubstantiation,”

Morsel Gallery
2005-06-01

Curated by Michael Krumenacker Head east young artists, head east. With the hype of real-estate mania hitting Western Williamsburg, all eyes are turning east in hopes of a renewed energy. The spiritual concept of the transcendental power of art, whether to transform material, practice, or practitioner, is the theme of this show at Morsel. Douglas Goldberg’s carved alabasters recall Victorian grave memorials. Brown craft paper is turned into Romanesque like pictures of sea and volcanoes by Jennilie Brewster. Notions of placement, and the contrast of natural vs. manmade, animate the intimate installations of Fawn Krieger, while Abraham McNally devises unexpected linkages between heavy base materials and form. Nicholas Knight creates beautifully joined wood panels etched with incised colored lines of geometric abstraction. Paint, polyurethane, and aqua-resin become oversized game dice that appear as polished malachite in James Bills’ 2d/10.
