“The Square”
‘temporary Museum of Painting 2007-01-08 The holidays are finally over, and art fair fever has cooled, so if you’re looking for a serious painting fix, check out “The Square”, a selection of mostly abstract painting at the landmark space the ‘temporary Museum of Painting, co-curated by Cathy Quinlan and Don Voisine.
A heavily pigmented neo-constructivist work in black white and red titled “From Me to Russia” by Stephanie Campos sets the mode for the more abstract side of things, while a couple of small head studies by Joel Adas display decisive brush work in renderings of closely observed subjects. In “Blue Being Left” by Joan Waltemath a broad stripe of dark blue plays off a metallic grey field creating an austerely formalist statement with decorative undertones. A spiral of red and yellow is overlaid with leaf shaped forms in white and pale magenta in “Hovering” by Asia Ingalls. Other artists include: Robert Appelton, Michele Araujo, Linda Day, Conor Foy, Mikyung Kim, Jacek Maczynski, Eliot Markell, Susan Mayr, Kent Peterson, Brent Ridge, Susan Schwalb, Merrill Wagner, and Jean Wolff.
